FIVE YEARS OF PLÁCIDO Y GRATA

From the very beginning, Plácido y Grata wanted to talk about hospitality in its simplest sense: making people feel welcome. In fact, the name was chosen precisely to represent that idea.
La antigua casa señorial sevillana con una arquitectura muy próxima al diseño nórdico.

Before the first guests, there were scaffolds. Before the suitcases, boxes. And before anyone asked what time breakfast was served, we first had to imagine what it would feel like to wake up here.

In September 2021, after months spent thinking through every space, Plácido y Grata finally opened its doors in the heart of Seville.

Five years have passed. And perhaps the most beautiful part of looking back is seeing how that project, which at the time existed mostly in our imagination, has become a place that has been lived in, shared, and loved by those who have passed through it.

A historic house beginning a new story

The building had already been here for a long time before us. Plácido y Grata occupies a former Sevillian townhouse dating from the late 19th century and rebuilt in the early 20th. Its arches, marble columns, entrance hall, wooden beams, and courtyard speak of a way of living in Seville that belongs to another time.

When the renovation began, led by the interior design and architecture studio Your Living Space in collaboration with Kiran Vasnani, the intention was never to erase that history. It was about adding another layer to it.

Their proposal was completely aligned with what we had imagined: the original architecture would coexist with a quieter, more contemporary approach to interiors, closely connected to Nordic design. Southern light, wood, natural textiles, ceramics, and furniture chosen to accompany everyday life came together to create welcoming interiors made for people. A place to slow down and, for a moment, feel as though time does not exist.

Then came the suitcases

Over these five years, people from countless places have stayed in our 15 rooms. Some arrived in Seville for the very first time. Others were returning after many years. There have been trips for two, family stays, spontaneous weekends, anniversaries, long-awaited vacations, and last-minute escapes.

People who have crossed the courtyard still half asleep on their way to breakfast. Who have asked where they should have dinner that night. Who have returned carrying shopping bags after hours of walking around Seville. Who have sat by a window to read. Who have worked for a while at a table. Who have ordered one more coffee before heading out.

And over these five years, there have also been those who have come back. Perhaps few things explain hospitality better than the desire to return to a place where you felt comfortable, where you could switch off and settle into a different rhythm. A place where, for a few days, it felt as though time did not exist. For us, knowing that someone wants to return means a great deal.

Durante estos cinco años han pasado por nuestras 15 habitaciones personas procedentes de infinidad de lugares.

A hotel is also the people who make it possible

There is another part of these five years that rarely appears in photographs, but which has always been deeply important to us: the people who arrive before the hotel wakes up.
Those who prepare breakfast, make the rooms, water the plants, welcome someone arriving for the first time, recommend a restaurant, make a coffee, or remember that the guest walking through the door has already stayed with us before.

From the beginning, Plácido y Grata wanted to speak about hospitality in its simplest sense: welcoming people well. In fact, the name was chosen precisely to express that idea. Plácido, something calm and peaceful. Grata, a small invitation to appreciate what is right in front of us.

“or remember that the guest walking through the door has already stayed with us before.”

Over time, we have come to understand that this original intention lives less in the furniture, or even in the architecture, than in the small gestures repeated every day. And behind each of them, there are always people.

That is why these five years belong especially to the team that has made it possible for an idea once drawn on a plan to remain alive 365 days a year. To those who are here today and to those who have been part of this journey along the way: thank you.

Five years looking at Seville from Monsalves

Our relationship with the city has changed too. When we opened this boutique hotel, we thought a great deal about which Seville we wanted to show our guests. Five years later, perhaps we have learned that there is no single version of it.

There is the monumental Seville everyone comes looking for, and there is another one that appears when you walk without much of a plan: a small shop, an exhibition, a church unexpectedly open, a bar you want to return to the next day, or a street that, at a certain time, catches the light in a particular way. Over the years, we have tried to share both. This blog is one example of that.

We like to think of Plácido y Grata as a temporary home. A place to return to after spending the day out, where, for a few nights, you can leave your book on the nightstand, your shoes beside the bed, and a few personal things scattered around the room. Those small gestures through which any space begins to feel a little more like home.

And there is still so much to come

Five years can feel like a long time when we think back to those first days of construction. And very little when we think about everything that may still happen here.

From that hotel still covered in dust, a few photographs remain, along with many memories and, above all, the same excitement about making sure that whoever walks through the door finds a welcoming place on the other side. Everything else has arrived with time.

People. Conversations. Breakfasts. Journeys. Encounters. Reunions. Ordinary days and days that someone will remember for a very long time.

That, in the end, is what these five years have added to the building.

Life.

Thank you to those who were here from the beginning, to those who joined us along the way, and to everyone who has ever slept, had breakfast, enjoyed a coffee, worked, celebrated, rested, or simply spent some time here.

Thank you for making this place your own. And thank you for these first five years.
